Drone Filming for BBC Children in Need – Race Across Yorkshire

Saturday 23rd September 2023 took us to Yorkshire for a BBC shoot with a difference. Eastwood Drones were brought in to film aerials for a comedic skit featured on the Children in Need main TV show. The concept was a spoof version of Race Across the World, titled Race Across Yorkshire, and starred none other than Adam Woodyatt — better known to most as Ian Beale — alongside Michelle Collins.

Our part in the production focused entirely on drone cinematography. Using the DJI Inspire 3, we captured cinematic general views across Pudsey and the wider Leeds area. The Inspire 3 offered smooth flight performance and high-end image quality, making it the perfect platform for this kind of stylised television content.

Because we were operating near the Leeds Bradford Airport Flight Restriction Zone (FRZ), detailed airspace planning and permissions were required. We worked closely with air traffic control and coordinated every flight to ensure full compliance with the FRZ regulations. Filming in controlled airspace always demands a professional approach, and our experience with these permissions meant we could keep the production on schedule while maintaining safety and legality throughout.

Filming for prime-time BBC shows often means balancing creative needs with strict logistical requirements — something we’ve grown very familiar with. Our role was to bring polished aerial visuals that enhanced the production value without slowing down the crew. Another rewarding job with a brilliant team.
